Carl Vernon "Spike" Helgren Jr., 83, of Comanche,Texas, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026. Born on January 28,1943, in Georgetown, Texas, to Carl Vernon and Velma Atkinson Helgren, he was called home to his Heavenly Father after a life devoted to faith, family, and sharing the joy of Jesus Christ.
A strong Christian man, Vernon lived with deep devotion to the Lord which was evident in all he did. He openly shared his faith, joy, and love for Jesus with family and friends, serving as a steadfast example of godly living and encouragement to all who knew him.
He enjoyed country living, reading his Bible, listening to sermons, singing hymns with the Gaithers, watching sports of all kinds, and sharing a good joke. He served his community and church as a teacher, coach, life insurance agent, pastor, and Sunday School teacher. Spike especially enjoyed coaching at Premont ISD and Refugio ISD. He served several pastorates, including Rockport Calvary and 22 years at Friendship Baptist Church near Beeville. He also served as interim pastor at First Baptist Pawnee and First Baptist Tuleta and served in many churches, including a cowboy church in Goliad and First Baptist Refugio.
Spike married his loving wife, Carolynn Sue Helgren, on October 2, 1964 in Pawnee. For 61 years they shared their love for God with others by Vernon preaching and Susie playing the piano.
He is survived by his wife, Carolynn Sue Helgren; sons Deron Helgren of The Colony and Kendall Helgren of Sipe Springs; daughters-in-law Theresa Helgren and Joy Helgren; and grandchildren Lily, Easton, Lauren, and Jackson Helgren. He is also survived by sisters Patsy Shoemaker of Buda, Sharon Holder of Austin, Sandra Grimm of Giddings; and brother Eddie Helgren of Smithville.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Comanche.
