Darwin Dickerson

November 19, 1953 — April 29, 2025

Darwin Keith Dickerson was born to W H & Mary Estelle Bennett Dickerson in the Rising Star Hospital on November 19, 1953. He passed from this earthly life into eternity on April 29, 2025. His Savior took him by the hand and led him home.

He attended May school his entire 12 years and graduated as a proud May Tiger in 1972. He always supported his school, attending almost every homecoming game & festivities. He bled green & white.

After high school, Darwin worked for Higginbotham Bros. He was first in Rising Star, then transferred to the Weatherford store.

In 1977, Darwin was hired by the City of Comanche public works department. There he made his life purpose come into being. He worked 42 years serving the city and its residents, the last 25 or so of those being Public Works Director. He wore & lived that title proudly and to its fullest. Serving others made him the happiest.

As Clint Tunnell stated so well (and l've paraphrased):

"Darwin lived life with a servants heart. And a majority of his life was dedicated to the City of Comanche and most importantly the citizens of Comanche. He retired after 42 years with the City...in the same department and worked his way up the ladder, retiring as the Public Works Director. As he stated, he took a job and made a career out of it. What Darwin did over the years for the City of Comanche will be unmatched by anyone. No mayor, council member, city admin or any other city official will ever do as much for Comanche as he did. There is no way for any of us to know what all he did; behind the scenes, up front or just because it needed to be done. Although he isn't a native of Comanche, he became an inner woven part of its fabric BY CHOICE. Servant is defined as one that performs duties for others. Darwin spent most of his life serving the people of our community. He has worn many hats...and often hats that many of us wouldn't want to wear. He has done their job sometimes in the public eye but a lot of the time behind the scenes. Some of their work was obvious, while much of it has gone unnoticed or done without witness. He maintained a loyal and dependable work ethic and had ALWAYS gone above and beyond to get things done. He always supported and cheered on his team and gave credit to those doing the good deeds and jobs under his supervision. The role he played in Comanche for many years was one of the most important that we have. He stepped into an even larger role of service to Comanche and the people that he served. He was always fully dedicated to the task at hand and often was quoted as saying "I'll do whatever is deemed necessary to complete the task at hand, whatever that may be."

Darwin served on the Comanche Airport Board, the Kiwanis Board of Directors and Officers and established & served as an officer on Upper Leon Water Board. He faithfully served on the Pleasant Valley Cemetery board for decades. He was also very involved in the Community Service Work Program and is a proud member and deacon at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Darwin's favorite & most precious subtitle was Pop to his four grandchildren that he loved and adored with all his heart & being.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; her children Amy & Chance Akin and grandsons Braxton and Harrison and William & Emily McNew and granddaughters Alli and Layni; his precious sister Carmelita Haynes, his nephew Charlie Haynes and wife Linda, his nieces Callie Cook & Lacie Cook, and faithful loyal companions Slinky & Henry. He leaves behind these and so so many friends and relatives. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Weldon.

For one so loved and admired, Darwin will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
