Doris McMinn

Feb 16, 1924 — May 10, 2026

Doris LaVerne Cotney McMinn went home to be with her heavenly father and loved ones on Mother's Day, May 10, 2026, at the age of 102. Doris was born on February 16, 1924, to James Brady and Willie Eugenia Cotney in Comanche County, Texas. She was blessed to grow up in a Christian family with her sisters Dorothy and Peggy. Doris was a good student who loved school and graduated from Gustine High School on May 16, 1941. She continued her education at Draughon's Business College in Abilene, Texas. Upon completion, she went to work at Coleman Oil Mill in Coleman, Texas. Her dad encouraged her to move to Fort Worth to live with her sister Dorothy, who was in beauty school. When she arrived in Fort Worth, she began working for Well Machinery, where she continued working until she began a family. After Dorothy finished beauty school, Doris became roommates with Mildred and Evelyn, who became her lifelong friends. During this time, she met the love of her life, Thomas, and they were married on January 8, 1949.

Doris always said she wanted two girls and two boys, and God blessed her with Jan, David, Fran, and John. She and Thomas raised them in a Christian home where they were taught Christian values and to always do one's best. For seventeen years, Doris was a full-time homemaker, but because she wished for each of her children to have a college education, she went back to work at Stripling's Department Store first as a salesclerk and then in accounting. Because she didn't drive, she walked long distances in all kinds of weather to catch a bus to downtown Fort Worth until she later found a carpool for transportation. In 1979, they moved back to Comanche to be near Doris's family, and she began working at Gore's Inc. until her retirement in 1989.

After retirement Doris and Thomas traveled around the US with son, David. She also enjoyed time with grandchildren, reading, gardening, sewing, doing handwork, and traveling all over Texas to collect antique pottery, but most of all she loved plants and always had a green thumb. She loved her house and was able to live there until just past her 100th birthday.

Doris accepted Christ as her Savior as a child and was active in churches in Fort Worth and Eastside Baptist in Comanche. Through the years she worked with GA's and taught preschool Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a faithful servant of the Lord.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Thomas, her son, David, her parents JB and Willie Cotney and sisters Dorothy Elliott and Peggy Gore.

She is survived by her daughter, Jan Wynn (Mike), of Gatesville, Texas, daughter Fran Milfeld (Kent) of Austin, Texas, son John McMinn-Reyna (Daniel) of Hutto, TX. She is also survived by grandchildren Julie Bugh (Ryan) of Williamsburg, VA, Michael Wynn of Gatesville, TX, Becca Milfeld of Dakar Senegal, Karen Milfeld (Sam) of Porto, Portugal, and Joel McMinn-Reyna of Hutto, TX. She leaves behind four great grandchildren, Owen, Allison, and Brooklyn Bugh, and Artemis Cook and soon to be baby boy Cook as well as many beloved nieces, great nieces, and great nephews.

The family would like to thank Eastside Baptist Church and Western Hills Healthcare Residence for their continued support of Doris.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastside Baptist Church.
