Starla Ann Russell
November 17, 1947—October 23, 2026
Starla Ann (Carter) Russell passed away Friday, October 23, 2026, at Hendrick Medical Center in Brownwood.
She was born November 17, 1947, in Sweetwater, Texas to George Louis and Anna Myrtle (Cain) Carter. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1966 from Lubbock Christian College in 1968 with an Associate’s Degree, and Angelo State University in 1971 with a BA. She worked in radio and television and met the love of her life working as a sales rep at KCTV in San Angelo. She married Stephen Russell, February 16, 1974, in San Angelo then on her first anniversary moved to Austin. While in Austin, their daughter, Wendy, was born. The whole Russell family became square dancers, round dancers, and cloggers. They spent many years traveling around Central Texas making new dancing friends. She spent twenty eight years on staff at UT Austin before retiring in 2003.
After Steve retired, they moved to the big city of Sidney, Texas and enjoyed a peaceful retirement helping around the community, being a substitute teacher, and being a member of the local chapter of TRTA. Starla knitted winter hats to donate to the school each year for as long as she was able.
The joy of her life was being a grandmother. She traveled to join John and Wendy for the birth of both grandbabies, now teenagers. Moments spent bonding with them were cherished.
Starla is survived by her husband, Steve; daughter, Wendy Stubbs of Cloudcroft, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Gabriel and Samantha Stubbs; sister, Janie Weaver (Larry) of Oklahoma, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by parents George and Myrtle Carter.
Graveside services for Starla will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Pendergrass Cemetery in Sidney.
She will be missed by many. Rest in peace, Starla.
