Sydney C. Clayton, Jr. of Comanche, Texas went home to be with his heavenly family and the Lord on Saturday, November 15, 2025. Formerly of Texas City and Hitchcock, he was born in Galveston, Texas on November 16, 1938. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Sydney Clayton, Sr and Eunice Theiler Clayton, as well as his brother Jack Clayton, and sisters Lydia Prater and Patsy Crouch. He will be dearly missed by his surviving family, wife of 66 years Peggy Leader Clayton, beloved companion pup Finley, daughters Sharon Maxwell and Donna Norris, sons-in-love Jimmy Wilbourn and Bryan Touchstone, daughter-in-love Tina Knight, grandchildren Michael Norris and wife Jessica, Jillian Norris Glasgow and husband Adam, Dean Abbey and wife Courtney, Steven Abbey and wife Jennifer, Jeffrey Abbey and wife Kendall, Westin Abbey, as well as 6 great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Better known as Sid, he retired from Union Carbide in 1998, and moved to Comanche shortly thereafter. He was an active member of the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 31 years, always grateful for his sobriety date of January 10, 1994. After arriving in Comanche, Sid set about making friends, which wasn't too hard as he never met a stranger. He loved to stay busy, passing his time helping out at a local tractor shop and mowing yards for those in the community who could use the help. Sid loved his "breakfast club" buddies, as well as Cindy and all the staff at City Café, and never turned down a chance to play dominoes with friends at the Senior Center. Sid was privileged to be called to serve his church, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where until recently he was a Deacon. He coached fast pitch softball teams from 1968 to 1983, after which he organized the local umpire association, where he also worked umpiring games until the 1990's. He loved all the girls he coached over the years, and one of his teams, the Texas City Chargers, won the state championship.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested all donations be sent to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and the Comanche All Pets Alive (CAPA).
